Cannot find the Winhlp32.hlp file

Legacy KB ID: 3750

Question

I cannot use the Help Index in Payroll Premier.  When I click on ‘How to use Help’ I get the error “Cannot find the WinHlp32.hlp file”.  How can I use the Help Index?

Answer

The error is being experienced by Windows 7, Vista and Windows Server 2008 users.  Microsoft removed the Winhlp32.hlp file from Vista and later operating systems, so older applications like Payroll Premier who utilize Winhlp32.hlp will experience problems.

This error does not occur when you click on Help > Contents.  A benign error: "There was a problem running the macro. (1037)" will appear, but you can just on KO to continue

Solution

Download the Winhlp32.hlp from this link:

https://library.reckon.com.au/library/winhlp32.hlp

Save the file to a safe location on your PC.  If you no other location, save it to your Desktop.

Open Payroll Premier and click on Help and then How to use Help;

You will get an error message: Cannot find the WinHlp32.hlp file.  Do you want to try to find this file yourself?  Click on Yes;

The Find Setup Wizard will open.  Accept the default selection Minimize database size (recommended) and click Next;

In the second window click Finish to complete the installation.

You are now ready to use How to use Help.
