Cannot reinstall QuickBooks on a SBS 2008 R2 64-bit Server

Question

I had to uninstall QuickBooks and re-install it, but when I re-install why do I get the message “Installation Interrupted”?

Answer

When QuickBooks is installed the SBS 64-bit server will insert a second QuickBooks 20xx-xx entry in Programs and Features.  The main installation is in the first entry; the second entry is not the QuickBooks installation.

When uninstalling, if the second entry only is selected, then the main QuickBooks installation remains intact.  Attempts to reinstall will generate the “Installation interrupted” message as only one installation on the machine is permissible. 

 

Workaround

When uninstalling, ensure the first QuickBooks 20xx-xx entry is uninstalled.  This act will automatically uninstall the second entry.  

After uninstalling, check Programs & Features again to ensure no QuickBooks 20xx-xx remains.

Then proceed to reinstall QuickBooks 20xx-xx.
