Warning: Excel allows 256 columns in a worksheet when attempting to export a report in QuickBooks QBi 2008/09

Legacy KB ID: 241

Question

Why do I receive the warning message: Excel allows 256 columns in a worksheet when attempting to export a report in QuickBooks QBi 2008/09?

Answer

The following message appears when exporting a report that includes more than 256 columns to Excel:

Excel allows 256 columns in a worksheet.
This report has XXX columns (X row title columns + XXX data columns)
Use "Customize" to change the number of columns in this report.

*Note: X represents the number of columns.

Microsoft Excel 2007 increased the limit for the number of columns to 16,384. However QuickBooks still adheres to the limit of 256 columns used in earlier supported versions of Excel.

Due to the limitation in earlier versions of Excel, QuickBooks will only allow you to export up to 256 columns (even if exporting to Excel 2007).
