Question

Why do I get the error “1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\ C9AE13788D0B61F80AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\..." when installing Quicken 2011?

Answer

This error occurs when you use the Quicken 2011.msi file in the folder CDdrive\HAB\DISK1\ to install Quicken.

It indicates that the user installing does not have sufficient permissions to access a vital Registry Key.  If the user is an Administrator and still gets this error, then the operating system has failed to give the Administrative User sufficient permissions.

Workaround

Give the Administrators Full Control to the relevant Windows Installer registry key.

Windows 7 & Vista

1.                     Open the Registry:  click on the Start Button and in the Search field type regedit;

2.                     Backup the registry: File > Export > select a location in Save In > enter a name in File Name > select All in Select Range > Save.

3.                     Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, then Windows, CurrentVersion, Installer, UserData and S-1-5-18

4.                     Right Click Components and select Permissions;

5.    Highlight Administrators in the Group or user name box;

6.    Ensure that the Allow checkbox for Full Control is ticked;

7.    Click on the Advanced button;

8.    Highlight Administrators in Permission Entry box and tick the checkbox "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object"; then click Apply;

9.    Click the Owner tab;

10. Highlight Administrators in the Change Owner to box and tick the checkbox Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click on Apply;

5.    Repeat Step 4 for System and any other user that requires permissions to install applications.  If a user does not exist, add the user to the list by clicking on the Add button on the Permissions for screen;

6.    Click the OK buttons to exit the dialog boxes;

You should now be able to install Quicken 2011.  If you still get this error repeat the steps above.

Note:  It is advisable to right click on the Quicken 2011.msi file and select Run As Administrator to install.

Windows XP

1.    Select Start > Run >and type RegEdt32 > Click OK;

2.    Backup the registry: File > Export > select a location in Save In > enter a name in File Name > select All in Select Range > Save.

3.    Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE;

4.    In the menu, select Edit > Permissions;

5.    Check Allow for Read and for Full Control, then click OK;

6.    Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and repeat steps 3, 4 for the keys Software and System;

7.    Expand the Software key, and repeat steps 3, 4 for Classes

8.    Expand the Classes key, and repeat steps 3, 4 for Installer

9.    If you have made any changes in steps 1 through 7, skip to step 10. If you did not make any changes, continue with step 9.

10. Open the Classes key, and click on Installer. In the menu, click Security and Permissions. Click the button marked Advanced. Check Reset Permissions on all child objects, then click OK;
