Payroll Premier Help Menu cannot be updated with Microsoft’s WinHelp Tool

Legacy KB ID: 5263

Question

Why can’t I apply Microsoft’s WinHelp Tool as directed in the Installation and Upgrade guide, to gain access to Payroll Premier’s Help Menu?

Answer

This issue arises on Windows 8 and later operating systems.

The WinHelp Tool cannot be applied in the usual way because the owner of this file is a user called “Trusted Installer”, and therefore you will not be able to move, cut, delete or rename this file.

Please follow the following steps to change ownership of the file.

1.    Get the winhlp32.zipfile here and extract it to your desktop

2.    Go to C:\windows\ and right click on winhlp32 and select Properties

3.    Click on the Security Tab and then the advanced button to open the Advanced Security Settings for winhlp32

4.    Note the second line called Owner and it will have another owner – like Administrators group, or the like

5.    Click on the Change button

6.    In the Enter the object name to select box, enter the username to which ownership of this file will be transferred – like yourself, or Admin, or the like

7.    Click on Check Names and the full path for your username should appear.

8.    Click on OK to complete

9.    You will come back to the Advanced Security Settings for winhlp32 screen where you will now see the new owner

10. Click on the Permissions tab and check the owner’s username is in the list.  If it is not in the list then:

a.    Click on the Add button to open the Permission Entry for winhpl32 screen

b.    Click on Select a Principle and enter the object name (as in 6. above)

c.    In Basic Permissions, tick the box Full Control, click OK and select Yes to the Windows Security message

11. Return to the Winhlp32 Properties screen (as in 2. above) and check that your username is listed there.  If not, then

a.    Click on the Edit button to open the Permissions window for Winhlp32

b.    Click Add and enter your username in the object name box

c.    Once your user appears in the Group or user names box, highlight it and tick the Full control box in the Permissions for Admin

12. Rename the winhlp32 file in C:\Windows\ to something like OLDwinhlp32

13. Copy the same named file on your Desktop (extracted in step 1 above) to this directory.

You should now have access to the Help Menu in Payroll Premier.
