Legacy KB ID: 3802

Question

Why do I get the error:  Qpv19.EXE – Application Error.  The instruction at “0x006f911e’’ referenced memory at 0x00000004. The memory could not be “written” when I try to open Payroll Premier for the first time in Windows XP Media Centre

Answer

The error is a general Windows error and points to a conflict between Payroll Premier and some other process on the PC.

Payroll Premier has not been tested on Windows XP Media Centre so we cannot provide a definitive answer on this problem.  However, other users with this problem found that reducing their screen resolution resolved the issue.

To adjust the screen resolution on Windows XP:

1.    Right click your Desktop and select Properties

2.    Click on the Settings Tab

3.    Under Screen Resolution, shift the bar to 1024 x 768

4.    Click on Save

Troubleshooting on other Systems

1.    Check the following on this computer:

a.    Screen Resolution settings are no higher than 1024 x 768

b.    The PC has sufficient RAM

c.    DPI settings in the graphics card are not set higher than 96dpi:

Control Panel > Display > Set Custom Text Size

d.    Log onto the PC with another admin user account – create a new admin user account if you do not have another one.

2.    Check whether the problem occurs in Safe Mode.

1.    Shut down all programs

2.    Click the Start button

3.    Select the Shutdown option

4.    Select the Restart option and then select the OK button

While the computer is restarting...

1.    Press the F8 key on your keyboard at a rate of about 4 keystrokes per second (Keep pressing the F8 key on your keyboard until a menu appears)

2.    Select Option 3: Start Windows in Safe Mode by pressing the 3 key on your keyboard and then pressing the Enter Key.

Windows will now start in Safe Mode

Wait for the message “Windows is now running in safe mode” to appear and then press the OK button to continue.

The words Safe Mode will now appear in all four corners of the screen.

3.    If Payroll Premier opens without error then the problem is a conflict with a process on this PC.  Remain in Safe Mode and:

a.    Close Payroll Premier

b.    Turn on one service, application or feature – eg your firewall;

c.    Start Payroll Premier – if it opens without error repeat steps 1 & 2 with the next service or application – eg, antivirus, Office, Desktop Manager, etc

d.    Continue until Payroll Premier fails to open – the last process tried will be the process that is causing the conflict.  Refer to your IT technician.

4.    If Payroll Premier fails to open and produces the same error:

a.    Ensure you have backups or other copies of your company files

b.    uninstall all previous versions and delete their folders:

                                          i.    Windows 7 & Vista:  C:\QPRollvXX

                                         ii.    Windows XP:  C:\Program Files\QPRollvXX

Where XX is your version’s version number: 2010/11 = 19

c.    Reinstall current version in Safe Mode.

If you have further problems you will need to consult your IT technician.
