Error -5006 0x8004005 when installing any update on windows Server 2003 and 2008

Legacy KB ID: 435

Question

Why do I get the above error when I try to install any update on my windows server 2003 or 2008?

Answer

In windows server environment any updates and patches have to be installed through Add/Remove programs.

To perform in windows 2003 environment:

Go to the add/remove programs in control panel and click on add new program, then select CD\Floppy button and then point it to the update patch executable file.

To perform in windows 2008 environment:

1. Open command prompt.
2. Type in "change user /install"
3. You receive a message "User session is ready to install application".
4. Once this is done then go to Start > Control Panel.
5. In "Windows 2008 Terminal Server" go to Control Panel > Install Application on Terminal Sever. Double click on that and follow the prompts to install software.

This works exactly same as Add/Remove program > Add New Programs >
