Editing an employee record; error message "Federal employer ID # is not valid"

Question

When I'm editing an employee from the Emloyee list in QuickBooks, an error message appears "Federal employer ID # is not valid" why does this occur.

This error then prevents me from saving the employee detail changes.

Answer

This will occur if a data file has been upgraded from QuickBooks version 8 to version 2002, with the Online Banking feature still active. Upgrading a version 8 company file with the Online Banking feature still enabled will cause problems.

To correct the issue;

  1. Re-install the previous version you were using V7.X or 8.1
  2. Restore a backup created in that version.
  3. Deactivate Online Banking (refer to the help file see; "online banking")
  4. Create another backup.
  5. Re-install QuickBooks 2002 and upgrade you're datafile again.
