Question

Why do I get the error “1603. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\ C9AE13788D0B61F80AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\..." when installing Quicken 2011?

Answer

Give the Administrators Full Control to the relevant Windows Installer registry key.  Different operating systems have different procedures.  Follow the procedures for your operating system.

Preliminary steps

Before you begin we suggest you create a Restore Point or backup your Registry.

Care:  These steps require you to enter the Windows Registry.  Changes to the Registry effect the behaviour of your computer.  Incorrect changes may prevent your computer from running properly.  If you are not confident in making changes to your Registry please refer to your IT professional.

Next, remove all REckon Accounts Personal / Quicken installation files off your PC.

  1. Download and Save the following utilities:

Revo Uninstaller:  https://www.revouninstaller.com/

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:  https://library.reckon.com.au/library/zip/WindowsInstallerCleanUp.zip.

These utilities will be used in later steps;

  1. Disable all security software on the PC – firewall, Anti-Virus, real-time monitors, IP scanners, Desktop Managers;
  2. Run the Revo Uninstaller and remove any traces of Accounts Personal (there may not be any);
  3. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove any traces of Accounts Personal (there may not be any) – see https://kb.reckon.com.au/issue_view.asp?ID=2676  for full details;
  4. Reboot your PC.

Option 1:  Windows 7 users

Download and run the Microsoft FIXIT utility.

CARE:  This utility will adjust security settings of your Windows Operating System.  Reckon recommends you consult your IT professional before continuing to ascertain what impact following this step will have on your computer and office network.

Download the Microsoft FIXIT utility from:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/in-windows-7-how-do-i-restore-security-settings-to/cd0f1e1e-739e-427e-baad-d2a744e61008

and follow the prompts.
