Error opening installation log file when installing QuickBooks

Question

Why can’t I install QuickBooks?  I keep getting the error

Error when installing program ”Error opening installation log file. Verify that specified log file location exists and is writable”.

Answer

Install QuickBooks under the Built-In Administrator account

 

The Issue:

The error message indicates that when the QuickBooks installation process attempted to write to a log file, but it was unable to write to the specified location. 

The current user does not have sufficient permissions to complete an installation.

 

Workaround

1.    Ensure that the user installing has full Administrative privileges to this PC;

2.    If the installation continues to fail, install using the Built-in Administrator.

 

Using the Built-in Administrator in Windows 8:

Windows 8 Pro:

         i.    At the Metro Start Screen click on Windows Key + X;

        ii.    Select Computer Management;

       iii.     Click on Local Users and Groups, then  Users, and then Administrator;

       iv.    Untick Account is disabled on the General tab.

        v.    On the Metro Screen click on the account logo (top right);

       vi.    Select Administrator user.

Windows 8 (Basic)

       i.       Open the command prompt (Win7) or command prompt admin (Win8)

      ii.       Type in the following command to turn on or off the account:

a.    Turning on: net user administrator /active:yes

b.    Turning off:  net user administrator /active:no

 

Using the Built-in Administrator in Windows 7 & Vista:

1.    Click on Start, then  All Programs, then Accessories, then right click Command Prompt and left click Run as administrator;

2.    Type in the following command: 

net user administrator /active:yes

3.    (When you have finished the following steps successfully, turn off the built-in administrator by typing:  

  net user administrator /active:no)

 

Using the built-in Administrator on a Windows XP:

1.    Shut down all programs

2.    Click the Start button

3.    Select the Shutdown option

4.    Select the Restart option and then select the OK button;

5.    While the computer is restarting press the F8 key on your keyboard at a rate of about 4 keystrokes per second (Keep pressing the F8 key on your keyboard until a menu appears);

6.    Start Windows in Safe Mode by pressing the 3 key on your keyboard and then pressing the Enter Key.

7.    When you have completed the installation, revert to normal mode by rebooting the PC. 

 

Additional Information
If the user installing was an Admin user, then the user account may have a corruption.  Creating a new user account with full Administrative privileges will avoid this problem.
