Not a valid win32 application error when installing Quickbooks

Legacy KB ID: 4611

Question

Why can’t I install my QuickBooks?  I keep getting a message that this is not a valid win32 application.

Answer

The error is generated when the operating system cannot identify the nature of the installation file.  This may happen for a number of reasons:

1.    The CD is damaged;

2.    Your CD drive cannot read the disc for other reasons;

3.    Security software is preventing the installation proceeding;

4.    You have an older windows operating system (eg Windows 98).

Workaround

Check that your operating system is Windows XP or later, windows Server 2003 or later.

Check the CD for any flaws – eg scratches.

Copy the contents of the Installation CD to your hard drive:

1.    Create a directory called QBinstall on your C drive or My Documents folder;

2.    Open the CD in Windows Explorer and copy all files and folders from the root directory of the CD to your folder created in Step 1;

3.    In your created folder, double click on setup.exe to launch the installation process and follow the wizard.

Install using Selective Startup

1.    See https://kb.reckon.com.au/issue_view.asp?ID=152 for full instructions.

2.    Some files and registry keys may have been created during your failed installation, and these should be deleted before installing again.

Obtain a new copy of the installation file

1.    Go to the Reckon Download Centre at https://www.quicken.com.au/Products/downloads.aspx and download a trial version of your QuickBooks (only the current version is available);

2.    You will use your unique Installation Keycode and not the the IKC provided by the trial;

3.    Install in selective startup mode.
