Legacy KB ID: 1664

Question

Why when i'm upgrading my datafile in QuickBooks 2007/08 I get an error C=44?

Answer

This error occurs as a result of corrupt transactions detected in QuickBooks that need to be deleted and reentered. Follow the instruction below as a guide to resolve this corruption.

  1. Before you go ahead with the conversion process, you will need to install you're previous version of QuickBooks i.e V7, 8 or 2002 in separate folders. (If you are upgraging from QuickBooks Version 7 or 8 make sure you have QuickBooks 2002 Trial and 2005/06 installed).
  2. In the QB2006-07 or QB2007-08 installation folder locate the file called QBWIN.LOG

   - This is the error log that will list what has gone wrong and some details about it.

   - Delete this file.

  1. Perform the upgrade process on the company file;

   - Once the error message appears click OK to remove it from the screen.

   - Locate the file called QBWIN.LOG in the QB2007/08 installation folder.

   - Open this file in NOTEPAD or WORDPAD or other Text Editing program.

   - This will list the steps that occur during the upgrade process.

   - Go to the bottom of the document and locate information pertaining to the transaction that the conversion failed on.

   - In most cases information such as DATE, AMOUNT, NAME, ACCOUNT are present.

  1. Now restore the backup you made from the QuickBooks version you upgraded from.

   - Using the information found in STEP 3 above, locate the transaction by using the FIND function of QuickBooks.

   - Click on the EDIT menu and then select the ADVANCED FIND option.

   - Select the appropriate FILTER option on the left hand side and input the search parameters.

  1. Once the transaction is found;

   - Make note of the details regarding the transaction in order for you to be able to re-enter this once the file is upgraded in the 2007/08 version.

   - Delete the transaction.

  1. After the REBUILD is performed make a BACKUP of the file.

   - Give this backup a DISTINCTIVE name in order not to overwrite any existing backups.

   - Perform the UPGRADE process on this backup. By following the upgrade notes again

  1. If the upgrade process still fails

   - Restore the last backup created in your original QuickBooks version.

   - Repeat steps 2 to 6 again. (This may need to be done several times depending on the extent of the data corruption).

  1. If the upgrade continues successfully you will need to re-enter any transactions you have deleted from the prior version.
