Error 800040403 when using Loan Manager after upgrading from XP to Win7 & 8

Legacy KB ID: 5124

Question

Why can’t I use the Loan manager after upgrading from an XP PC to a Windows 7 PC?  I get the error: 800040403.

Answer

Restore your Portable Company File to a folder with exactly the same path as on the XP PC.  Copy the .LMR file to this same directory.

The Issue

The basic file structures in Windows 7 & 8 and Windows XP are different, both for personal and public folders.  Personal files are located at:

·         In XP:  C:\Documents & Settings\User\My Documents

·         In Windows 7 & 8:  C:\Users\User\My Documents.

When you upgrade from an XP machine to a Windows 7 or 8 PC, the position of the company file is adjusted for the new operating system, but links that file has to other modules files, like the Loan Manager, do not change.  Your Loan Manager does not launch because its direction to your Loan Manager file no longer exists.

Workaround

1.    On the XP machine, create a Portable Company File backup of the company file;

2.    On the Windows 7 or 8 PC replicate the XP machine’s directory tree to the company file;

3.    On Windows 7 or 8 PC, restore the Portable Company File into the same folder and directory as on the XP machine;

4.    Copy the .LMR file for your Loan from the XP machine to the same directory on windows 7 or 8 PC.

You should now be able to access your Loan Manager.
