EmpDupe file fails to validate in ECI portal – illegal character

Legacy KB ID: 4595

Question

I have prepared my EmpDupe file but when I upload it to the ATO via ECI it fails to validate.  I get the error:

Error1: Please contact your software developer.  The record Length must contain 628 characters but we found an illegal character at position ‘90’.

It also says “File IO Error”.

Answer

The error is generated because a character of a different type to what was expected was found in a field (or position).  It may be expecting a number but instead the field has a letter or character.

The error will probably also refer to a record number.  Go to this entry and count the number of characters from the start of the record to the position number indicated in the error message.  This is the field in error.  Associate this section of the string to the Payment Summary to identify the field in error.

In several cases this error was generated by having an illegal character in the employee’s name.  The apostrophe in a name like O’Brien will cause this error.  Change the name to OBrien to process the EmpDupe.

How did we do?
