QuickBooks 2002 and Microsoft Terminal Server

Legacy KB ID: 900

Question

Does QuickBooks work with Microsoft® Windows NT® Server 4.0, Microsoft® Windows® 2000, or Microsoft® Windows XP, Terminal Server Edition?

Answer

The Terminal Server Edition integrates "Dumb Terminal"* support into the Windows NT 4.0, 2000, and XP operating systems. There are three possible scenarios:

QuickBooks is supported in this configuration:

  • The Terminal Server is connected to a stand-alone computer. This is the normal environment for running QuickBooks. The program must be installed locally, and the data file can be on the local computer or put on the server.

QuickBooks is not supported in these configurations:

  • The Terminal Server is connected to a "Dumb Terminal." This is a server-based environment where all applications are installed on the server and run from the server.
  • The Terminal Server is connected to a stand-alone computer that is antiquated (Client - Server). The Terminal Server was designed to take older computers and allow a user to participate in a network environment by installing an application on the server and running the application from the server similar to "Dumb-Terminal."

Note: Please refer to the User's Guide for more information on network requirements.
*A type of terminal that consists of a keyboard and a display screen that can be used to enter and transmit data to, or display data from, a computer to which it is connected. A dumb terminal, in contrast to an intelligent terminal, has no independent processing capability.
