Question

I'm using QuickBooks in Multi-user mode while sharing my company file from a Windows 2003 Small Business Server. When a second user attempts to open the file they receive an error 'The Data File ****.QBW is not a QuickBooks data file or is damaged'. How can I fix this?

Answer

Windows 2003 Small Business Server is confiquired with 'opportunistic Locking'  by default, this feature allows clients to lock files and locally cache information without the risk of another user changing the file. This feature causes the conflict when more then one client machine attempts to utilise the shared company data file in multi-user mode.

You'll need to modify the Windows registry to overcome this conflict. We recommend that you seek professional advise by a qualified Microsoft technician when modifing the Windows registry if you are not comfortable in so yourself.

Please follow the instructions provided at www.microsoft.com knowledge browser article no. Q296264 titled 'Configuring Opportunistic Locking in Windows.
