QuickBooks says no company file open

Legacy KB ID: 439

Question

I just installed QuickBooks 2002 and when I open QuickBooks, it tells me that there is no company file open. Did I lose my information?

Answer

Your company file still resides on your computer unless you've actively removed the file itself. You simply have to find your company file and navigate to it inside of QuickBooks. From the Windows® Start button, choose 'Find' then 'Files or Folders…'. In the new window, type in *.QBW in the 'Named' field. Ensure that the 'Look in' option is set to 'My Computer'. Click the 'Find Now' button and let it search for the company file. Once the search is finished, you will notice the company files in the lower portion of the window under the 'Name' column. Also take note of the 'In Folder' to the right of the company file you wish to open. Ensure that you can see the entire path by maximizing the window to the largest it can be. For example 'C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks' Open QuickBooks again, then choose 'Open Company' from the 'File' menu. In the 'Open' window, change the 'Look in…' to the drive letter that appears in the path in the Find window; following the example above, choose the C:\. Double-click on the first folder of the path. Follow our example above; double-click on the program files folder in the middle section. Double-click on the Intuit folder next, then the QuickBooks folder. You should now see the company file, double click on it and this will open your company file.
