OL-202 error when trying to import a bank statement

Legacy KB ID: 4133

Question

Why can’t I import my bank statement in QIF format?  I make the select to convert the QIF file to QBO and choose my bank account and then I get the error:

QuickBooks could not connect to your financial institution. This can happen if
* your financial institution is having problems with its Internet banking system.
* your Internet connection is not working properly.

Wait 15 minutes, and then try connecting again.

If you still cannot connect:
* open a Web browser and check that your Internet connection is working properly
outside of QuickBooks. If it is not, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
or network administrator.
* if you use firewall software, check that it is configured to allow QuickBooks to access
the Internet.
* go to the Help menu, select Internet Connection Setup, and check that
your connection is set up properly in QuickBooks.
* contact your financial institution to see if its Internet banking system is working properly.
[OL-202].

Answer

We have not been able to identify the source of this error as it does not occur on all flavours of Premier or Enterprise.

Many users have found this problem to be benign.

Workaround

OK the error and continue with the import of the bank statement.

If further errors occurs, import the QBO file directly:

1.    File > Utilities > Import > Web Conncect Files >

2.    Select the QBO version of your bank statement file

3.    Continue with the import.

If problems persist, examine the QIF file:

1.    Browse to the folder that contains your QIF file

2.    Make a copy of the file to serve as a backup

3.    Right-click the file and choose Open With and select Notebook

4.    Check the first line – it should be !Type:Bank

5.    If you have anything else, delete that line and the next few lines so that the first line is !Type:Bank

6.    Attempt the import again.
