Legacy KB ID: 495

Question

Why does my windows 7 hang after I restart my PC, I have just installed QuickBooks and Google desktop?

Answer

Windows 7 may fail to load, or hang on the Welcome Screen, after installing QuickBooks with the Google Desktop option selected.

This problem will occur if there is conflict between a key startup application or utility on the PC and the Google Desktop application.

Although this problem has been observed on Toshiba laptops with the TOS RealTime utility installed - an utility that conflicts with the installation of Google Desktop - it can occur on other makes with other utilities or programmes.

Step 1:

Restart your computer in Selective Startup Mode.

Open the Run window:  Click the Windows Start button and select All Programs > Accessories > Run.

Enter msconfig in the Open field.

Click the OK button.

Click the General tab

Select the Selective Startup radio button.

Select the Load System Services checkbox.

Clear the Load Startup Items checkbox.

Click the Services tab.

Select the Hide all Microsoft Services checkbox at the bottom of the window.

Click the Disable All button to clear all selected services.

Clear the Hide all Microsoft Services checkbox.

In the Service list, verify the Windows Installer checkbox is selected. If it isn't, select it.

Click OK.

Click the Restart button in the System Configuration window to restart your computer.

Remove your current QuickBooks QBi from your machine through the Control Panel - Programs and Features

Now you need to restore your computer to start in a normal mode by following the steps below:1.    Open the Run window: Click the Windows Start button and select All    Programs - Accessories - Run.
2.    Enter msconfig in the Open field.
3.    Click the OK button.
4.    Click the General tab.
5.    Select the Normal Startup radio button.
6.    Click OK.
7.    Click the Restart button in the System Configuration window to restart your computer.

Step 2:

Once in Normal mode, install your current QuickBooks YET make sure that this time you DO NOT install Google Desktop.

Step 3:

If the same problem persists, restart your computer in Safe Mode by following the steps below:

1.    To begin entering Windows 7 Safe Mode, turn on or restart your PC. Just before the Windows 7 splash screen appears, tap the F8 key to enter Advanced Boot Options.

2.    You should now see the Advanced Boot Options screen. If not, you may have missed the short window of opportunity to press F8 in the previous step and Windows 7 is probably now continuing to boot normally assuming it's able to. If this is the case, just restart your computer and try tapping F8 again.

3.    Here you are presented with three variations of Windows 7 Safe Mode you may enter, choose the very first One - SAFE MODE only.

·         Click on the START (Windows Logo) button, left click on COMPUTER and navigate to the following directory:

o    C:\Users\All Users\COMMON FILES\INTUIT\QUICKBOOKS

·         Once you’re in that directory go ahead and rename the QBregistration.dat file to QBregistration.old.

·         After renaming the file, restart the machine and you should now be able to log in to Windows 7 as per normal.

If on launching QuickBooks you encounter a problem with configuring your chosen edition, continue with the following steps.

i.              Click on the Windows START button, left click on COMPUTER and navigate to: C:\Users\All Users\COMMON FILES\INTUIT\QUICKBOOKS;

ii.             Delete the QBregistration.dat file;

iii.            Rename the QBregistration.old file to QBregistration.dat

iv.           Launch QuickBooks again and you will be able to configure your chosen edition.
