“Installation interrupted” when reinstalling QuickBooks QBi series

Legacy KB ID: 3918

Question

I am reinstalling my QuickBooks QBi series.  Near the end of the installation I get the error “Installation Interrupted” and the program is not installed.  Why?

Answer

QuickBooks QBi series will not install if there is still an installation, or a fragment of an installation, of the same year version on the PC.

Solution

Before commencing Reckon recommends you have a couple of backups of your company files, at least one on an external media.  If you have any company files in the installation directory (C:\program Files\Intuit|QuickBooks 20xx-xx) then you should move them to another directory.

Remove the existing installation of this version of QuickBooks QBi:

·         Windows 7 & Vista:  Control Panel > Programs and Features > left click on QuickBooks 20xx-xx and click Remove

·         Windows XP:  Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > left click on QuickBooks 20xx-xx and click Delete

Where xx represents the year:  eg QuickBooks 2010-11

Delete the installation folder c:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 20xx-xx.

Reinstall QuickBooks 20xx-xx.

If you still get the Installation Interrupted error, uninstall QuickBooks with the REVO uninstaller and install again.  You can obtain a copy of this free uninstaller at:  https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html.

Reinstall QuickBooks 20xx-xx.

If you still get the Installation Interrupted error, then you will need to run the Microsoft Tool from:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

Then reinstall QuickBooks 20xx-xx.

Additional Information

Windows XP users

This operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft or Reckon.  Users should speak with their IT professional and follow their advice.

We provide the following utility to assist in correcting such faults with older versions of QuickBooks (now Reckon Accounts Business) still running on Windows XP.  Microsoft has acknowledged this utility, the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, may have adverse effects on your PC and other programmes may have to be re-installed.  Do not use it for any other application.

1.    Click here to download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and save to your Desktop.

2.    Double click the desktop icon to install it.  If you require installation instructions, click HERE;

3.    Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Cleanup\ and click on msicuu.exe file;

4.    Scroll down the list of installed programs and select Quickbooks 20xx-xx and click on Remove – your first installation will now be hidden from the operating system.

Reinstall QuickBooks 20xx-xx.
