QB Manager 2013 directs me to open the file directly in a 2008/09 version of QuickBooks

Legacy KB ID: 5019

Question

Why does QB Manager 2013 ask me to open the Portable Company File (QBM) and the Accountant’s Copy Transfer File (QBX) with an older version of QuickBooks?  I get the errors:

You are trying to open a QuickBooks 2008/09 portable company file.

To correctly open this file please use the ‘File > Open or Restore company’ inside your version of QuickBooks 2008/09.

You are trying to open a QuickBooks 2008/09 Accountant’s Copy Transfer File…..

To correctly open this file, please open through your latest version of QuickBooks 2008/09.

Answer

Open QBM files and QBX files directly in the Accounts Business (formerly QuickBooks) versions and editions they were created in.

The Issue

QB Manager v2.3 (2013) cannot open Accounts Business (formerly QuickBooks) 2008/09 and higher Accountants Copy (.qbx) and Portable (.qbm) files due to their format.

Additional Warning

If you open these files in a later version and/or a higher edition than the one used to create it, and you will returning the file to your clients with changes, then your client will not be able to open the file.  They will need to upgrade to your version and edition.

Please note this restriction applies to different release versions as well – eg: original release and post-Tax Table Update or any other service pack.

For example, Quickbooks Pro 2012/13 (R1: original release) must be opened with the same version and not say QuickBooks Pro 2012/13 (R2: Tax Table Update applied) or later and higher.
