Question

Why do I receive this Internet Explorer script error on a computer running Windows NT when opening a QuickBooks Navigator or center? An error has occurred in the script on this page. Line: [XX] Error: Automation server can't create object

Answer

Possible Cause: Important: This article only applies to QuickBooks installed on computers running Microsoft® Windows NT®. Note: In this error message, [XX] is a two-digit number that varies with the Navigator or center you are trying to open. Possible Cause 1: The Windows file comcat.dll (used to create new Active X objects) is a version other than 4.71, making it incompatible with Windows NT. Possible Cause 2: The file qbprefs.dll may be missing, damaged, or located in the wrong directory. To resolve this issue: Search for the file comcat.dll located in the C:\WINNT\system32 folder. In the Search Results window, right-click the filename and choose Properties. Click the Version tab. If the file version is not 4.71, refer to the " Resolution " section of Microsoft's article Error Message: An ActiveX Control on, This Page Is Not Safe (Q251365) for instructions on replacing it with version 4.71. If the file version is 4.71, then comcat.dll is not causing the error message. Proceed to Step 4. Reinstall QuickBooks (this will not affect your company data file): Insert the QuickBooks CD into your CD-ROM drive. After a few moments, the installation program will start. Choose Reinstall QuickBooks. When prompted, enter your original Installation Key Code. You do not need to re-register. If you previously installed a QuickBooks update, you should also reinstall the update. Reinstalling QuickBooks should resolve issues related to a missing, misplaced, or damaged qbprefs.dll file. NOTE: If you are unsure of how to do either of these, or are not comfortable doing them then you should consult a qualified technician before commencing!
