Legacy KB ID: 2080

Question

Why wont my Quicken program backup to my USB drive or flash card?

Answer

Any issues with backing up on USB devices would probably be associated with Windows and the settings it may
have for the USB device.

Follow these steps to check your settings:

1) Double-click on the My Computer icon to display the list of drives
2) Select the USB drive and right-click to choose the Properties option
3) Click on the Hardware tab to display the list of fixed and removable drives
4) Select from the list the USB device of type Disk drives and then click on the Properties button
5) Select the Policies tab and look at what option is selected for Write caching and Safe Removal
6) Choose the appropriate option based on the usage style of the user
    - if the user tends to plug and unplug the device regularly throughout the day choose Optimize for quick removal
    - if the user tends to plug-in the device at the start of the day and un-plug at the end of the day choose Optimize for performance

Backing up a file is only half of the equation. The other side is testing that the backup can be successfully restored.

Depending on the level of security and reliability you are after, taking into account whether a user will actually follow through with the entire process
you can choose to:

a) Backup daily to multiple sets and testing each backup daily (restore to a new temporary file name) and checking standard reports (Trial Balance, Balance Sheet)

b) Backup daily to multiple sets and test restoring the weekly backup at the end of each week

c) Make your own combination of backup / test restores suitable to the usage levels of the business.
