XML VAT return submissions

Introduction.

You may have recently received an email from HMRC advising that the way you need to submit VAT returns is changing.

When will this change happen?

From 8th April 2021, HMRC will no longer accept VAT return submissions using XML.

What is XML?

XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language. This is the programming language that HMRC has used to accept VAT returns since they could be submitted electronically.

HMRC is now moving all VAT return submissions to MTD. Hence the change.

What should Reckon One users do?

The good news is that Reckon One is already MTD ready, so VAT returns can continue to be submitted without interruption. There are 2 steps you need to take to switch to MTD:

  1. Register for MTD with HMRC
  2. Enable and authorise the MTD functionality in Reckon One. Find out how to do this here.

You can now continue to submit VAT returns in this application using the latest, secure technology.
