Error: QuickBooks Launcher has encountered a problem and will now close, when opening QuickBooks

Question

Why won’t my QuickBooks open?  I get the error: “QuickBooks Launcher has encountered a problem and will now close. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Answer

You may experience this issue when:

·         A saved QuickBooks desktop configuration contains more information than the QuickBooks Launcher can open;

·         You try to open a QuickBooks network data file (.ND) file by double-clicking it instead of the associated company file (.QBW)

 

 

Solution 1:  Ensure you are opening the proper company file (extension .QBW)

1.    Launch QuickBooks by clicking on your Desktop icon or from All Programs > QuickBooks > QuickBooks

2.    If No Company Open screen appears, select your company file.  If your company file is not listed there, then click on File > Open or Restore company > Open a company file > Next, and select your company file from its saved location.

 

Solution 2: Open your company file to the No Company Open screen first then choose not to save desktop settings.

QuickBooks will automatically open the company file that was in use when QuickBooks was last shut down with the windows that were open.  You can force QuickBooks to open to the No Company Open screen by:

1.    Hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and launch QuickBooks by clicking on your Desktop icon or from All Programs > QuickBooks > QuickBooks

2.    Continue pressing the Ctrl key until the No Company Open screen appears;

3.    Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard and select the company file to open.  QuickBooks will open the file without the windows that were previously open;

4.    Go to Edit > Preferences > Desktop View> My Preferences tab;

5.    Select Don't save the desktop;

6.    Click OK to save and close.

 

If you still cannot open your company file you will need to restore your last backup.
