Question

When I try to open QuickBooks I get a message saying that I need Internet Explorer 6 or later. But I have Internet Explorer 5.5 or later installed. Why do I get the message? It won't let me open QuickBooks

Answer

There are 2 places in the Registry that the I.E. version is kept. One of them is updated by I.E. 6 during install. This one is checked by the QuickBooks installer when installing from the CD. The other one is not updated by I.E. 6 during installation and this one is checked by QuickBooks when opening the program.

  1. Close Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Start > Run, type 'Regedit' then click 'OK'.
  3. Double click HKey-LocalMachine > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Version Vector.
  4. Double click on I.E. on the right-hand side, in the value data field type in the I.E. version number that you have eg 6.0000 then click OK and close the Registry editor.

QuickBooks should then open correctly.

If QuickBooks still fails to open;

  1. Select Start > Run, type 'Regedit' then 'OK'.
  2. Double click HKey-LocalMachine > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > App Paths > IEXPLORE.EXE.
  3. Double click on '(Default)' on the right-hand side, in the value data field type in 'C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe' then click Ok and close the Registry editor.

As an alternate solution, QuickBooks can be configured to override the current version of Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  1. Locate the qbw.ini file in the QuickBooks default installation directory:
     · QuickBooks 2008/09 or later: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks [Version] where [Version] is your version of QuickBooks.
     · QuickBooks 2007/08 or earlier: C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks.
  2. Right-click the qbw.ini file and select Open With.
  3. Select Notepad and click OK.
  4. Locate the [Misc] section of the qbw.ini file. If the section does not exist, add it to the bottom of the file.
  5. Enter IEVersionOverride=600 below the [Misc] section heading on a new line.
  6. Select the File menu, select Save, and then close Notepad.

QuickBooks should then open correctly.
