Backing up data to a CD-ROM using Microsoft® Windows XP

Legacy KB ID: 1125

Question

How do I back up my QuickBooks company data file to a CD-ROM using Microsoft® Windows XP?

Answer

Windows XP has an integrated CD recording feature that allows you to write directly to a compact disc without using other software as an intermediate step. (Consult Windows XP Help for additional information.) You may need to update Windows XP before using the integrated CD recording feature. Please visit Microsoft’s Web site for further details.

If you are using Microsoft® Windows® 98, Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition, Microsoft® Windows NT 4.0®, or Microsoft® Windows® 2000, the only way to back up your QuickBooks data file to a CD is by using third-party software designed for this purpose, such as RoxioTM Easy CD Creator®. Please be aware that Quicken does not support third-party software.

A QuickBooks 2003 or higher company data file can be backed up to a recordable CD-ROM using Windows XP either automatically or manually.

Note: If you are not able to create a successful CD-ROM backup, please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q279157, "Description of CD-ROM Recording in Windows XP" at www.microsoft.com for full technical details.  Contact your computer manufacturer for additional information.  Intuit does not provide technical support for Windows XP.
