EmpDupe file rejected: The file size is not a correct multiple of the record length.

Legacy KB ID: 5041

Question

Why is my EmpDupe file being rejected by the ATO?  I get the error:

Please contact your software developer. The file size is not a correct multiple of the record length.

I have checked all the entries and all the information for the employer and employees is complete and correct.

Answer

Upgrade to Accounts Business 2013 and create the EmpDupe again.

The Issue

You may experience this problem if you create the EmpDupe file in QuickBooks 2012/13 for the financial year 2012/13.

The EmpDupe File contained in QuickBooks 2012/13 did not comply with the requirements for the ETP Payment Summary.  The EmpDupe File was updated in the Accounts Business 2013 release.

If you had an ETP payment for a terminated employee in FY2012/13 and created the EmpDupe file in QuickBooks 2012/13, then it will contain an unacceptable format for ETP reporting and the ATO will reject it.

Where no ETP payments are made to terminated employees, an EmpDupe file created in QuickBooks 2012/13 will be accepted by the ATO.

Workaround

Upgrade your company file to Accounts Business 2013 and create your EmpDupe file.
