Error: "Printer not activated Error -31" when printing Letters from QuickBooks Online

Question

Why do I get the error "Printer not activated Error -31" when I attempt to print Letters from QuickBooks Online?

Answer

The default printer for Letters has become set to the QuickBooks PDF Converter (v303).  You cannot print directly to the QuickBooks PDF Converter (v303).  You also do not have the ability to change the default printer for Letters within QuickBooks.

 

Workaround

 

Use the Windows shortcut key Ctrl-P to print. 

This function will bring up a Printer dialogue box that will allow you to select a printer connected to your local PC.  You can also choose to print to a PDF Writer (such as Acrobat, PrimoPDF or CutePDF). 

 

 

Additional Information

To enable printing from QuickBooks Online to a local or network printer you must activate the function to connect to local printer when you first access QuickBooks Online.  

1.    Start QuickBooks Online

2.    On the WebAccess page, click on the QuickBooks icon - The RemoteApp dialog box will open;

3.    Under Allow the remote computer to access the following resources on my computer, tick the Printers box.

If you do not see this option, click on the Details button in the bottom left-hand corner of the dialog box.

4.    You can also have the Drives and Other supported PnP devices ticked

5.    Click Connect to continue with the QuickBooks Online login process.
