Appcore.dll error when installing the 2012/13 Tax Table Update

Legacy KB ID: 4575

Question

I have just applied the 2012/13 Tax Table Update to my QuickBooks 2012/13.  When I launch QuickBooks I get an error message referring to appcore.dll and QuickBooks does not open.  What do I do?

Answer

The reference to appcore.dll means that your tax table update did not complete successfully because:

  • A QuickBooks edition (any version 2008/09 and later) was still running when the tax table was applied;
  • A QuickBooks Service was left running.

Although you may have followed the installation instructions to close QuickBooks, all applications and reboot the PC before applying the update, in some instances the QuickBooks Services may have restarted when the PC was rebooted.

You will need to repair your QuickBooks installation, Activate and re-apply the tax table update.

Detailed Instructions

Repair QuickBooks

  1. Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features;
  2. Right click on QuickBooks
    edition
    2012-13 and select Uninstall/Change;
  3. On the QuickBooks Maintenance Wizard click Next;
  4. Click on Repair and click Next.

Your QuickBooks installation will now be repaired.

Activate QuickBooks

  1. Launch QuickBooks and open your company file (or sample file);
  2. Click on File and select Activate QuickBooks and follow the instructions to activate across the internet;
  3. If your activation is not accepted on the internet you will need to call customer Service on 1300 784 253.

Check that QuickBooks Services are not running:

1.    Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

(Alternative: Task Manager > Services)

  1. Scroll down to the letter Q and ensure if any of the following processes are present they are stopped:

a.    QBCFMonitor Service

c.    QBDBMgr

    2. QuickBooksUtilityService

Run the Tax Table Update 2012/13 by clicking on the downloaded file on your Desktop.

Additional Note

You keep a copy of the Tax Table Update with your installation disk, as if you need to reinstall or repair QuickBooks in the future, you will need to reinstall the tax table update.
