Remote computer requires Network Level Authentication error logging onto QuickBooks Hosted 11-12

Legacy KB ID: 4102

Question

Why do I get the error:

‘The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, see your system administrator or technical support.’

when I try to log onto the new QuickBooksHosted 2011/12 (Standard account)?

Answer

Network Level Authentication (NLA) is an authentication system introduced by Microsoft with its Vista operating system and continued in all later operating systems (Windows 7 and Server 2008).  It completes user authentication before you establish a full Remote Desktop connection and the logon screen appears. This is a more secure authentication method that can help protect the remote computer from hackers and malicious software.

Windows XP with service pack 3 natively does not have Network Level Authentication ability.  Users will need to make a change to their computer’s registry to allow the computer to utilise NLA.

Solution

Windows XP users should firstly ensure they have upgraded to Service Pack 3 and have installed all Microsoft Automatic Updates.

Care:  This workaround involves modifying the Registry.  Modifications to the Registry if not carried out correctly may impede your ability to use your computer.  If you are not confident of making modifications to the registry you should contact your IT professional.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Create a Restore Point (or export the Registry in Step 3);
  2. Open the Registry Editor  -  Start > Run > regedt32

3.    If you did not make a Restore Point make a backup of the Registry now:

File > Export > select a location and name > select All > Save.

  1. Open the Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > Lsa
  2. In the details pane, right-click Security Packages, and then click Modify;
  3. In the Value data box, add tspkg. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK;
  4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > SecurityProviders;
  5. In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders, and then click Modify;
  6. In the Value data box, type credssp.dll. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK;
  7. Exit Registry Editor;
  8. Restart the computer.

You should now be able to log onto QuickBooks Hosted 2011/12 (standard account) without any NLA error messages.
