16 bit subsystem error when installing Cashbooks v8 on XP

Legacy KB ID: 3187

Question

Why do I get an error telling me the 16-bit subsystem in dameged or invalid?

Answer

The Quicken installer contains 16-bit code and requires a functional 16-bit subsystem for a successful installation. If you are running Microsoft® Windows XP, NT® 4.0, or Microsoft® Windows® 2000, and critical files needed to enable the Microsoft® Windows® Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) 16-bit subsystem are missing or damaged, your system will not be able to run 16-bit utilities, which will result in these errors.
