Save as PDF and emailing from QuickBooks on a Windows 8 PC

Legacy KB ID: 4758

Question

How can I get QuickBooks to Save as PDF and email on a Windows 8 PC?

Answer

When attempting to Save as PDF or email you will get one of these error messages:

·         Printer not activated, error code -20;

·         Could not print to printer;

·         QuickBooks could not save your report as a PDF file.

QuickBooks functions have been assigned lower permissions by the Windows 8 operating system, even though you may have administrator rights.

Workaround

Launch QuickBooks with Administrator permissions:

1.    Right-click the QuickBooks icon on your Desktop and select Properties;

2.    Click the Compatibility tab;

3.    Under Compatibility mode, tick the box Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

4.    Under Privilege level tick the box Run this program as an administrator;

5.    Click OK to complete;

6.    When you launch QuickBooks it will run in elevated permissions mode.

Additional Information

If not using a desktop icon, carry out the same steps on the QuickBooks executables (QBW32.exe and QBW32PremierAccountant.exe) in the installation directory (default:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks 2012-13):
